They would take you seriously, but for a standard Associate level role. Would be a difficult / impossible sell to break in any higher given lack of transferable skillset.
Perhaps some luck the earlier stage you go - maybe you enter as VP at a growth equity tech focused firm. Hard sell though
Off the top of my head, Accel-KKR, Thoma Bravo, Vista (in Austin), TA, Summit, General Atlantic, Norwest, WestCap
middle market / upper middle market shops with specific expertise in software / tech, also big on growth equity. I think growth equity shops would give you the biggest play with SWE experience
Mentor
Wait how old are you? You have a BA offer with 5 YOE? Or it’s 5 years collective experience across different firms?
Either way, your 2 year stint at mck will make you competitive. Larger MFs that never hire consultants will be harder (but not impossible), otherwise just do a google search of consultant friendly funds in SF. There’s a lot.
If we’re nitpicking I’d say Bain might be even a little better if you’re trying to do PE
You should be in a very good spot to get an offer at a tech focused fund assuming they aren’t concerned by how old you are. But I’d definitely take a step back and really consider what you’re doing. If you are a SWE with 5 YOE at Google I imagine you’re already making what top-PE associates are making. You’ll be giving that up for a MAJOR pay cut at McKinsey and then 4 years of crushing hours (BA + PE associate). Just saying, really think about it.
I agree with what others have said. If you’re wanting to go into PE, you should be able to work out that the rewards do not necessitate the risk.
That was the first thing I did when I got into google. They said no
Google while I don’t agree with your choice, I do think your logic is sound. If you want a diversity of exposure to tech and really learn how the build the business, early stage GE is a good spot, especially if they focus on operational improvements. Just know you’re about to enter a world of hurt. At least negotiate for a Sr BA role if you have an offer.
Maybe see if you can move internally to CapitalG…
Yeah you’d be a shoe in for TMT funds, go for it
