The goal is to avoid burning bridges. That’s all. Keep it short. Sincerely thank the people who have been important to you, including staff members and colleagues who have really invested in you. And praise the firm’s people effusively, but very briefly. Doesn’t need to be a novel and the longer it is the more risk you have of pissing someone off, which you don’t want to do. Rite is fine.
Also, if you want people you used to work with to be able to reach you, include a personal email address or phone number where you don’t mind being contacted. I’ve saved the farewell emails of people who did that, who I maybe didn’t have a personal relationship with but would like to keep in touch with.
Dear __________,
Please accept this email as formal notification that I will be leaving the firm on ______ __, 2020.
I am grateful for having the opportunity to work at __________, learning from some of the brightest legal minds who I will certainly miss, including the support staff who have been nothing but gracious in assisting me. While I recognize this news does not come at the most ideal time given the current pandemic, I will of course do everything possible to make the transition of my cases as smooth as possible.
Thank you for your guidance and mentorship. I wish the firm much continued success.
Sincerely,
__________

Conversely, is a farewell email required or necessary? I don't know that I need to firmwide blast my departure, when I could just tailor an email to the people I've worked with or known over the years.
In writing something short and sweet, I found it helpful to focus on the people I really cared about, the people I would miss, the aspects of the firm I liked and appreciated, and the times when colleagues and I supported each other. Despite a lot of bad stuff (hence the whole leaving thing), there’s invariably a lot of positive, too.
I would be as specific and concrete as possible in what you want to say, don’t use generic platitudes. Thank the people under you by name (assistants, paralegals, other staff).
