It’s where you are based. So if you live in NY and work remotely it’s NY tax.

I’m the opposite. Live in NJ work in NY.
You file in both states.
I receive a credit on my NJ tax for what I paid to NY. So you aren’t double taxed, but you do need to file in both states.
It depends on whether you ever work physically in the office at all. If you never step foot in Jersey you should be good. But if you do, then you have to file in both states (they split the taxes based on the proportion of physical work days in one state vs the other).
Hah I was told I'm gonna get a separate W2 for the Jersey-based company no matter if I ever set foot in Jersey. But we'll see.
NY taxes see higher so you’ll end up paying that rate anyways.
During the pandemic I lived in NY and worked remotely for a NJ company but never set foot in the office. They were deducting NJ taxes, but I looked up the law and it turns out you only get taxed by NJ if you physically work there. They changed my work location to New York and stopped taking out NJ taxes.
I’m an NYC-resident who worked in NJ and if I remember correctly, the amount of state taxes that I paid to NJ was deducted from my NY state tax liability. Still had to pay the NYC taxes which weren’t auto deducted from paycheck.
