Here’s what I always ask:
- Why is the position open? Is it a new role? Did someone leave? How long has it been open? This set of questions gives the hiring manager an opportunity to reveal any red flags; look out if a role has been open for a long period, or they have had several people in the role over a short period.
- Is there anything that is currently happening (or not happening) that needs to change/be addressed immediately? This question gives you a true summary of what you’re being hired for. It also gives you the opportunity to understand if you can actually deliver that KPI. Is it operational things that need to be solved, or are they looking for some large new strategic thinking that might be difficult to deliver (especially if there have been others before you that have failed to deliver)?
Good luck!
