Any one with county counsel / city attorney experience? In my 4th year as a lawyer. Rural location. Looking at moving from public defender (3 years) to county counsel in order to maintain and develop more skills.
Criminal defense has felt like a great, easy fit for me, and I enjoy it. I do not get time to do much research or writing and I am worried about letting those skills go and being painted into criminal law only for my career. Civil law feels intimating to me already.

There are different aspects of being county counsel. In my county, the office is split between litigators and the counseling & drafting division. The attorneys in our counseling & drafting division have no litigation skills. So depending on your county setup, you might not be able to retain all of your existing skills and learn new ones

I was seconded to a city attorney office a long time ago to try municipal infractions cases, have several friends who have worked in large and small city attorney offices, and have worked in various contexts with city attorneys. In rural government I have long been fascinated by how fractious small town politics can be, especially when it comes to land use matters. In many rural counties budgets are VERY tight so salaries aren’t great and resources can be scarce. In the flip side a good municipal attorney is a godsend for the community, yo if you’re able and can navigate the politics you can make a really positive difference in the community. The skills question really depends on the nature of the jurisdiction and how big the office is. If you’re in a small country you may end up doing most everything from advising the mayor or city manager on constitution law and land use issues to supervising the defense of municipal liability cases to overseeing municipal contracting and contract administration. In a larger office the scope of your work. Ight be more limited. Are you looking at a particular municipality or just asking in general?

So I was offered a role in Strategy Consulting in after 2 years in Risk Consulting however, after 2 years I’ve only worked on Internal audit engagements few ad hocs such as updating risk register and the delegation of authority matrix.

Honestly speaking I am doing good and I am up for promotion in October however I am not fully enjoying my time but I fear that the move would not be a good and I can’t hit the ground running which scares me.

Any advice and past experiences in such career shit?

Mid-level associate at a mid-size regional insurance defense firm practicing coverage litigation. Salary is capped b/c my firm only does I.D./coverage and has no direct-hire comm clients. Second round of interviews with a comm lit boutique where I would be the only associate with 5 partners. Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? I've never worked at another firm.
