Got messaged by a C3 . ai recruiter. Read that wlb is bad and that the interview process is absurdly long, but the Glassdoor reviews are 4.2 and can't find actual hours worked posted by anyone. How's the culture really? I'd be aiming for DS consulting, something more functional but with DS/ML concepts as my differentiator.

Does one learn Kafka or is Kafka inflicted upon one in a seemingly never ending series of unclear morass that we now collectively recognize as a cloud specific language? Sometimes it feels like a constant trial; other times, I feel like my team is metamorphosed into something else completely but it is not remarked upon.
Probably best to avoid, lest you wake one morning from uneasy dreams, transformed in your bed into some kind monstrous streaming platform developer

Or a huge insect.
Not individually. If necessary at a job they’ll tell you and let you prepare but no point in doing it by yourself unless you’re curious or have a lot of time
If you are looking to learn something because it's interesting and could be a nice bit of knowledge to have....go ahead and learn it. If you grasp it easily, becomes part of how you show up e.g. a better architect, better conceptual designer and able to lead a wider varoety of work?, yeah do it.
If it's a challenge, if you are doing it to be a hard differentiator, it's possibly not the best choice.
But remember your 'value' is an unclear equation of all these variables, not an NPV on any single skill set

If you have to do near real time BI development (e.g., say you are creating a health monitoring dashboard on a 15 minute delay collecting data from actoss the country), it can be handy to understand the mechanics of how the data is available and when / what you can refresh... but you can also just ask you data engineer.
Data streaming stuff is for developers, not a mainstream skill in analytics/data science. Steer clear unless you're looking to exit into a role where you're working with those developers and want an edge.
Feels like that's beyond what most BI teams build, but can't hurt I suppose
Which is a perfectly fine reason to do it.
It adds to your depth and breadth of thinking, you will know considerations others don't, well before you even get to developing etc. Seems like of you have the competence and it's an easy lift, why wouldn't you.
I learnt basic css, so conceptually I could talk web aspects around custom apps...but I'm analytics focused. I can quickly talk through pseudo code, do a bit of sniff test QA...just another thread of understanding I can leverage
Edit: thread of understanding != expertise
Got it. Are you still in consulting? I have been struggling to pin down where I want my skillset to take me
I am.
It's a hard decision....IF....you make it entirely unilateral and based on your own internal processing.
If you factor in all the other variables, you could 'end up' in the right spot. Where's the white space, where is the firm going, where is the novel business issue, what is interesting to you, do you stitch things together or like scale playbooks etc etc
