Nerello mascalese and schiava. I also love Nebbiolo even though it’s not maybe lesser known in the Italian wine world
Aglianico is a great, heavier-bodied red typically grown in southern Italy
Cannonau! Sardinian variety.
True. It’s like Barolo, which is just a Nebbiolo from a particular region.
Whenever I see a Pecorino I buy it. Lesser known white Italian varietal that probably confuses people, so usually a good value too. Sometimes has a nutty character that is quite unique.
Amarone is uncommon to run into. I love the deep rich texture and complexity even if it tends to be dangerously close to being sweet.
Rising Star
Good wine but often too “big”. I have a few bottles I save for big BBQ/Grilled meats.
i love a good number of the reds produced by Pizzolato Winery in Treviso. They are organic and don’t have sulfides.
Schioppettino is a favorite. The rockstars at Matthiasson in Napa make a great one.
The producer Le Coste out of Tuscany and the famous Sicilian natural wines from Frank Cornelissen. Drink anything from these interesting wine makers.
Headed to see Frank tomorrow! So excited. Had a 2006 Magma the other day at dinner that 🤯
Nerello mascalese, Amarone, schioppettino
Barbera and Salice Salentino
Big Chianti fan
Ah yes, that lesser known Italian red
Barbarescos are lovely and slightly more approachable than their big brother (my favorite) Barolo.
Also love the wines made with sangiovese grapes
I enjoy Primitivo’s. Very similar to Zinfandel’s
I had to double check, but these are two names for the same grape. Italian/American name distinction
