Yea 2010 likely too early but don’t blame you for jumping on it and glad it opened up!!
Question, what are peoples tasting notes for “earthy”? I’ve always associated that with dirt, grass, mushrooms, etc. but I’ve had multiple experiences recently where I’ve asked for an earthy wine and am pointed towards wines that are natural/funky which is almost opposite of what I’m looking for. I’ve stopped using the term outside of a few places that have somms on staff. Is this just a cop out for poorly made wine or is there something I’m missing?
I often see “earthy” casually thrown around for any dominant “non-fruit” aromas, which unfortunately can mean you’ll be directed to funky/natural wines where the fermentation has led to something atypical or faulty as the top note. Sometimes “earthy” also gets interchanged with what I’d prefer to call “rustic”, but what can eventually be too much Brett. I prefer to use it like you said, as a general category for things like potting soil, forest floor, etc.
