figure out the hierarchy;
hold your cards close to your chest (in the beginning, you never know who will use it against you/judge you);
be nice and cordial to everyone, especially the support staff;
figure out the office politics (and try to stay out of it, especially the secretary/paralegal drama, do not engage);
develop a system to keep track of all deadlines, correspondence, and a case list of all matters you work on (to take with you whenever you leave the firm, to prevent future conflicts of interest);
make sure you have an electronic calendar (I use icalendar) and enter in all deadlines, meetings, appearances, etc.;
make a habit to enter your billables at the end of the day, every day;
any document you touch, or edit, make a separate folder (that only you can access) with copies of them (make a copy of each draft you give to the partner!!). early in my career, my partner would go into my documents, delete everything, and then want it changed back, but of course, there wasn't a copy of the previous drafts available. this will save your life!
make sure to take a vacation, AND to travel, or do something fun on the weekends to prevent burnout!
do not hook up with anyone in the office, period. it's not worth it.
establish boundaries!

Believe me I know I actively avoid applying for firms but I respect people who are able to do it
Under promise and over deliver—every time. Too many times new folks like to appear super confident (“oh yeah, I can get that done in no time…”) and their attitude and statements set expectations higher than they would be otherwise, which just sets you up to disappoint.
Kick ass from the beginning. Be in the office a lot, be timely, put in a lot of effort, etc. be a yes man. it’s a lot easier to ride a good reputation than try to overcome a bad first impression.
