Any tips for stepping into a first GC role? I’ve been thinking about what it takes to transition into a first General Counsel role. It seems like a big shift — from execution to leadership, strategy, and managing expectations across the business. For those who’ve made the jump — what advice would you give to someone preparing for their first GC role? What do you wish you knew earlier?

The company can completely burn around you while you give it your all. Don’t ever forget your ethical obligation to the company, regardless of who the people in leadership are.

Once you’ve discharged your obligations, get creative with solutions.

Be trusted counsel. Work product is what you’re team does, it shouldn’t be the bulk of what you do.

I interviewed at a law firm and had my final round last Friday. The Tuesday afterward, I got a call from the recruiter saying the firm won’t have a decision for another week. I believe they’re interviewing other candidates. Does that make me second or third choice? And does the fact that I’m working with a recruiter hurt my chances of being selected due to the commission? Should I hold out for the offer or is 1+ week a sign that I won’t be selected?

Curious if anyone else is or has been in the same boat. I started as an assistant at an entertainment law firm prior to passing the bar. Upon passing, the partner told me they would hire an assistant for me since I now became an associate. That was 1.5 years ago and I am still in the limbo of juggling my own workload + doing assistant roles for my supervisors. I have also had no increase in pay, which is a huge deal for me. Is this normal in the entertainment world? Any suggestions?
