Freelancing is SO much better than staff. More $$, less stress
I freelance and yes the creative quality is shit but I also don’t care about advertising, it just pays the bills so I can work on what I really love.
Maybe I’m in the minority. But aside from the money being better, I prefer full time.
If money were all I cared about I would have gone into finance.
As a freelancer I find the majority of assignments to be soul sucking, empty projects. I’ve gotten portfolio pieces out of it but I consider that to be incredibly rare.
I personally wouldn’t go freelance unless my book was very solid and I was okay not updating it for the entire time that I freelance.
Over 3 years freelancing. Infinitely happier. I make over twice as much money than I ever did full-time. My personal life is better. My work-life balance is better.
It takes everything in me to not laugh in a recruiter’s face when I get an email asking if I’m interested in a full-time role “with a really cool account and team!!”
I’m FT, husband is freelance. He definitely has the better setup. He makes three times what I do, usually on less hours. I would be scarier without the safety net of a FT partner though. If he has a few weeks without work, we still have (much less) money coming in from my salary, and our benefits are covered through my work.
Thanks for this. My spouse is FT in healthcare and makes far more than I’ll bet make and benefits through hers, better and cheaper.
In my experience, you rarely work on a project long enough as a freelancer to credibly put it in your book so if you are just starting out and need to build your portfolio, it may not be so great for your career long-term. If you’re book is already stellar (and up to date) and you’re not looking for awards then sure, get that $.
Thanks! My portfolio is what it is at this point. Last two shops were portfolio killers so really kind of missed a few years of getting that creative cred up. At this point, it’s because I’m decent at it and it’s a way to pay bills.
Warning: it will slowly but steadily erode your portfolio.
It can, but not always. It's made mine much better. The frequency of good assignments has gone down, but it's still possible to get lucky with a good agency/client/assigment every once in a while. The key is recognizing the good opportunities and busting your ass on them.
