Meeeee. Will be leaving law in the next couple of years (around 8 years of practice) for part time work and my spouse (not a lawyer) will do the same in the next 4-5 years. No kids. And we paid off my loans within 5 years of practice and recently our mortgage.

Dog shelter, Trader Joe’s…something like that.

Complete retirement sounds boring but I’ve considered trying to amass enough money to bootstrap a coffee shop or a yoga studio so I can work somewhere I like and own

My goal is to stay in law until I hit coast-fire. Will see where we’re at after that. I dream of a regular job I don’t have to think about when I’m not at work

My number is low because I’m planning to go retire in a really cheap country.

100%. 34, $3.2m net worth. Think about it every hour of every day...

That is my exact number

Thank you guys! Give me hope!
I have seen sooo many lawyers who work to death. I began to doubt whether I was rational.

like

Yeah. My number is 2.5 million for FIRE. Not having kids. I was also thinking about FILE (financial independence live early) and working part time doing contract work or for a non-profit in which case I’d have a lower number.

God knows how much I want to get out here

What’s FIRE?

I cut back on my hours when I left Biglaw and started my own shop. That's not FIRE, but most days it feels like it.

True FIRE has to wait until my alimony runs out and my kids finish college.

like

Me! I hit/will hit the beginning of my regular FIRE at 1.5m this year. But I think 2.5 will be more reasonable. But I also have some potentially big life changes coming up with marriage and maybe a child so not sure of my number atm.

Tiger Analytics has started firing their new joineers(freshers) as they don't have adequate projects. I don't know where the freshers will go as they haven't done any project as such.

This is just pathetic from organization. They are just firing people owing to failing a test of certification, for which other company gives 3 trials but they are giving only one try with negative markings

How much time is acceptable to bill to admin per day?

I have a partner that calls me multiple times a day to talk about updates on our cases. Sometimes just to ask “anything to update me on?” He’s known across all of the associates for doing this. Most of the calls repeat information I’ve already provided in emails to him or the client. I normally bill this time as “strategize on” or “consider XYZ in further of” and it keeps getting appealed. Any advice?

How long is acceptable to ask to decide on an offer, especially when another place you really want to work at is moving a bit slower? I know this question has been asked before but I feel like 2022 has been its own beast in the legal market and would appreciate any advice. Thank you!

What is the scoop on med mal defense vs. plaintiff work? Is defense more respected by other practice areas if I were to switch somewhere else later?

Does anyone know how litigation finance works on the plaintiff side? If someone wanted to bring a lawsuit against their former employer would a general contingency arrangement with a plaintiff’s firm make sense? Or would one need to find funding and then contact a plaintiff’s firm to actually handle the case? I’m a transactional lawyer, so this is out of my wheelhouse.
