It helps to reframe networking as finding your people, not everyone has to be your best friend, but some connections can be real. Focus on giving, not just getting, and the genuine ones will stick. The rest? Let them scroll past.
Agree with AD1. There is so much chatter and action speaks louder. Are you getting what you came for? If that's a way to pay the bills, work to build a resume, ferret out possible "teammates" for something you're cooking up... get it. Stay professional but get wht you came for an some times it's just being in the business in a productive way.
I struggle with this myself, I hate the fakeness of networking events, knowing people are just out to gain something. But if you’re there you are too, and just because people are after something doesn’t mean you can’t make any genuine lovely connections!
Totally get this—it can feel really performative at times. I’ve started focusing on finding a few like-minded people rather than “working the room.” Real connections take time and being genuine builds the strongest relationships overall. I’m personally trying to bring back physical business cards - the worst someone can do is pick it up again to throw it away!
