Anyone else find the hardest shift of becoming a senior attorney in house is the lack of oversight and visibility from the GC/a supervisor?

I report directly to the GC and she explicitly does not want to know what I’m working on unless I have a specific question/need support. If we have a 1:1 I may give her a quick heads up but she does not micromanage and expects me to just handle.

Anyone else at this point? Any advice?

So... do you want the GC to manage your work, or do you just want the GC to recognize the work that you're doing for credit? If the former, that's not what GCs should be doing. You were hired because they trust you to do a good job and to raise your hand when you need help. If it's the latter, use your one on ones to sell yourself and your accomplishments.

Oh neither actually! I love what I do and really love that she trusts me to do it without breathing down my neck! She also definitely recognizes it so that’s not an issue.

It’s just a newer dynamic for me going into my 7th year and can be a challenge. Curious how others experience the transition from midlevel to senior is all.

It might be an EQ thing. Have you tried taking some tests to see how you come off?

Like how you might come off in social interactions/conversations. Like it or not, a lot of our job is relationships and politics.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

What’s it like being a senior in-house corporate attorney in biotech or tech? Is the work interesting or is it mainly just reviewing contracts and admin/CYA work for biz folks?

Would love some advice / thoughts. I went straight from law school to a corporate legal department in house for an asset manager. They like “home grown” talent and I “be worked hard and risen relatively quickly (AGC in 9 years). I work hard and get a lot of complicated deals done (structured products and private funds). I can’t shake certain people (in compliance department mainly) thinking I don’t have enough experience to do what I do because I didn’t come from a law firm. Any advice?

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. It’s definitely going to be a pay cut coming from big law but I do get some nice equity in the company. Is the jump worth it? I’m so burnt out by big law and this seems like an awesome opportunity to help shape a newish company. Any tips on how to figure out if this is the right move for me?

If you practice collections in-house, what do you earn and do you receive a bonus?

I have practiced for five years and make $121k as an employee of a financial services company. As the only attorney, I oversee all statewide collections efforts, from demand letter to garnishment, with a case volume of nearly 7k new cases per year, of which the majority I end up litigating. I receive only a $1k bonus per year. Is my compensation fair? My last insurance defense gig was $75k.

Can anyone help me wrap my head around this post Series C start-up equity offer? It’s an IP director position, the the base is $170 with 10% bonus (both lower than I was expecting). There’s also an equity component: 0.15% of current fully diluted equity. This equates to about 30000 shares at a strike price of $2. They also indicate the preferred stock price is $6 and preferred stock equity is $188k (whatever that means). They are in the middle of a new financing and valuation round.
