Anyone else have a work spouse? I had one at the restaurant. And since we were just randomly assigned, she called it her arraigned marriage. Fortunately, her wife had a sense of humour.

Just read a story earlier, though, where the work wife is taking things too far.

Aw, that’s lovely! I had a gentle, grounding work friend who was like my emotional anchor. We called each other “partner in calm.” We had each other’s backs like clockwork, just knew what the other needed. But yeah, boundaries are key. What made your “arranged marriage” work so well?

Hmmm. Not sure. Equitable splitting of tasks. Unique knowledge positions that we readily shared with each other. Stockholm Syndrome? (Not the best work situation, corporate was going through some things, and didn't really understand our market, and we bonded over the sheer absurdity of just everything)

That’s cute. It’s very interesting how work relationships start and develop into undeniable bonds

Never had a work spouse. However, I did have a work "mom" and "brother".

Not me. I find the whole idea kind of creepy. Like....can't we just be work friends? Not work husband and wife? Idk, might just be me but I've always thought it was weird.

It definitely could be weird. But we didn't socialise outside of work (and actually worked opposite shifts by design, so didn't have a full overlap of shifts). I think she was looking at it as we were thrown into this together, and had each others' backs, so it was like an arraigned marriage of convenience.

Of course, I have often said that I should be able to claim my employees as dependents, as I have to support them so much, and always have to get them out of trouble.

Haha, “arraigned marriage” — that’s perfect. Work spouses can be lifesavers, but yeah, there’s definitely a line. What happened in that story?

Well, this was over 20 years ago. We ran a restaurant, were both assigned to different restaurants, came back to open another restaurant, and then I got moved back to the original restaurant when the management crew failed spectacularily. Throught all of that, we worked together on a daily basis, helping each other out and watching over each other's restaurants throughout. We both left the company at the same time. And although we probably haven't spoken in over a year (for no reason other than being busy and being on other sides of the country now), we remain close over two decades later.

Key West advice. Looking for a 3-4 day stay in February. Hoping to add this as an extension to an already planned trip so don’t want to spend to much money. Everything seems so pricey for not great value. Any recs on stays / best activities, let me know!

I was supportive of Lori when this virus first started but her actions since have dwindled my support of her. I don’t expect her to make every decision correct nor do we have to agree with all of them. I believe she should be correct around 75 percent of the time but I believe she is in the 50 percent range. I know everything doesn’t fall on her shoulder but things haven’t been great as of late. Hopefully they figure out something soon.

Partners - Do you ever take vacations?

I have been at my current firm for about 1.5 years, and in that entire time the partner in my group hasn't been out of the office a single time. Is that normal? I can't tell if it's standard for big law partners to not take time off, if the dynamics for my group may be different (only 1 partner in the entire group), or it the partner I work with is just a masochist.

Back when I was getting started in the food world, I worked flipping burgers at In-n-Out. A man came in and said the burgers he had gotten weren’t right. He dumped the food on the counter and then he started throwing them back behind the counter. We gave him a refund and then his demeanor completely changed. He was calmer and he told us to have a great day as he left us to clean up the mess he made.

He was a republican staffer on capitol hill.
