Moving up can mean less work life balance, and sometimes the advancement still doesn’t even measure up to the sacrifice. Depends a lot on the company, not every step up comes with all the downsides, but it is something to really think about before putting in the effort.
I think that anyone can set boundaries at any level. You don't have to sell your soul to move up in your career, we just have old models of people who did that. Learn to manage your time very effectively, and to say no graciously and confidently to things outside of your job responsibilities and work time. It really works, I promise
I am right there with you OP. I have always been very career driven and that has often come at the price of my personal time and my work life balance. I think there is a way to have both but I have not yet been able to figure out how people do it.
I have come to the realization and acceptance that in my accounting/tax field, if I want the balance that I need, I need to be an individual contributor and have a solid knowledgeable boss. So I seek roles that align with that. Maybe in a different phase of life, I will focus on titles and growth etc
