Anyone else struggle with career advancement without sacrificing personal life? I want to move up, but every time I think about the next step, I wonder how it’ll affect my time outside work. I don’t want to look back and realize I missed out on life because of my job. How do you find balance while staying ambitious?

Moving up can mean less work life balance, and sometimes the advancement still doesn’t even measure up to the sacrifice. Depends a lot on the company, not every step up comes with all the downsides, but it is something to really think about before putting in the effort.

I think that anyone can set boundaries at any level. You don't have to sell your soul to move up in your career, we just have old models of people who did that. Learn to manage your time very effectively, and to say no graciously and confidently to things outside of your job responsibilities and work time. It really works, I promise

I am right there with you OP. I have always been very career driven and that has often come at the price of my personal time and my work life balance. I think there is a way to have both but I have not yet been able to figure out how people do it.

I have come to the realization and acceptance that in my accounting/tax field, if I want the balance that I need, I need to be an individual contributor and have a solid knowledgeable boss. So I seek roles that align with that. Maybe in a different phase of life, I will focus on titles and growth etc

Hi fishies 🐠 I’m an Art Director that’s trying to transition over to UX Design. I have experience building websites and some previous freelance work doing some UI/UX. What’s the best route to transition over and would I need to apply for entry level roles? Does an AD role with a UI/UX focus even exist? I enjoy the thinking of UX design and am comfortable designing interfaces but I’m mostly unsure of the process of working with an UX team. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Any motorsports photographers out there?

I would love some advice to get a little more serious with this hobby of mine. I have gone to a handful of events, both local tracks and professional circuits as a spectator, but wish to know what the best approach is to gain media credentials to take this passion of mine to the next next step.

Any advice is welcome, I would very much love to fuel this passion of mine with the hopes of eventually making motorsports photography a career path.

Considering trying to make a pivot. Currently a prosecutor. I have a lot of trial experience and did some ID work. Are there any logical roles aside from just litigation to keep an eye on as for as in house? I’ve been thinking there must be some applicability to the investigation skills I’ve developed but I don’t know what the move should or would be. I am coming from a place of ignorance - not sure what would suit my background.

Having one of those weeks where I have no motivation to advance or work hard. Being a reasonably paid payroll clerk seems like a much better career choice than a high-flying, well paid consultant.

I recently lateraled into Big Law. Most of my colleagues are homegrown. My shift did involve a big change in practice area, and there's work that I haven't done before that I now have to do.

But, sometimes I feel stupid here, even for work which I have done previously. It's like I'm unable to understand instructions the first time around. And I have seen my colleagues getting annoyed by that. It's like I've become dumb. In my defence, I could say they're giving half assed instructions.
