I've always written out exactly what I'm going to say before I go in to these meetings and I literally bring it with me on what looks like just something to write with so I can reference it if I get nervous. I cite my performance wins, any monetary growth I've directly contributed, as well as a summary of my plans moving forward. I continuously state my gratitude and excitement, and then sternly read my list of demands. I ask for a raise every 6 months so the first meeting was the most awkward but since then they've come to expect them. I ask for 5% every time. as far as who you ask - that's going to differ from role to role. I go to the CEO. HR isn't who you would ask where I work.
several times wasup
^you are amazing I must learn from you
Thanks all! I got a raise with the promotion and based on recent demands, went back to ask for a few more thousand dollars and did not succeed with that ask. Until next time I guess...
Yup. I got a very generous amount. Nice WPP loophole but you have to position it correctly to leadership. I was also very very overdue for a raise/promo. Use your best judgement and just be honest.
"-- is what would truly make me feel valued"
@Leo I feel like I'm disclosing some big secret. this is more or less my second agency, and the first one gave me a raise without me having to ask every three months, and then a colleague told me to ask at my current agency every 6 months, so I do. I guess I'm just #blessed. but I also read that every 6 months is standard, particularly if you can prove your worth.
@CD1, definitely not standard
Some of us don't work in environments that allow us to seek raises every 5 seconds, and most of us certainly aren't that close with the CEO. However, I totally agree that noting your accomplishments, business wins, and other notable work that directly improved the agency is a great way to broach the subject and makes you look intelligent and serious about the role, not just whiney
@CD1 where on earth do you work where they're giving you a raise every six months?! Kudos tho
When you get a promotion, you're taking on more responsibility and accountability, yes? Then of course you ask for more money. Why would you not? You're grateful they're recognizing you, yes, but you're also taking on more work. It's a fair ask.
What exactly is the wait period after a promotion? Can I still open the conversation a month in? Or is that bad taste 😝
I have had friends in tech tell me that every 6 months is standard for a raise. I was in shock. Have never heard of that in advertising.
How do you do it
Just nervous about coming off as ungrateful, but just need a little more from them. Start with a convo with HR?
