Machines? How about Rube Goldberg? Middle school and high school kids like doing that. You can make a requirement to have machine end on a certain task / like pushing; or dropping.
Create a marble run/domino/reaction course? There are some great YouTube videos to use as inspiration. You could have them analyze cause and effect, Newton’s laws, or have them utilize or identify the simple machines incorporated. Do one small set up at a time for each machine then put multiple ones together? You could do one per class period or even span it out over the entire simple machines unit. Sounds fun, I may even use this for a teamwork challenge.
Physics isn’t my strongest subject, but what about making paper airplanes?
Okay! That’s pretty cool! The big thing that my county’s curriculum is pushing is simple machines. I’m open to all ideas though
How about pumpkin chuckin machines? Make a day of it. Challenge teams to see who can create a devise to throw the farthest. Or if this is illegal in your state, perhaps a popsicle stick catapult.
