If the firm knows what is good for it, and assuming they’ve been fair to you up to this point, they’ll be supportive. You’re a new source of revenue. If they’re not supportive, give your business to a competitor.
Thanks for your input! The firm has been supportive thus far and I have good relationships with my colleagues.
So, you're going to be a potential new client?
Good point
Who cares?
This is fair
Going in house is something they should be happy about. Don’t sweat it
When I left the firm to go in-house, the firm was happy since the company I went to is a potential client. The other associate who left the firm a couple weeks before me left to go to another law firm and they didn’t even let her finish out the two weeks. They wanted her gone asap and they did not host a farewell happy hour for her like they did for me.
Good to know!
My firm was weird when I left. Some partners were cool and genuinely congratulatory; others seemed to transparently shift into BD mode; and then still others seemed bitter (which I didn’t understand).
The good news is that it doesn’t matter what they think. You can now continue to stay in touch with those you like or are helpful to you and you never have to talk to the assholes again.
