50 m

funny

.005 m

I think $5M is pushing it unless someone got lucky with their investments.

Anecdotally, I'm 34 and married, and our HH NW is $2.4M. No kids, still rent, zero parents' money (both grew up relatively low middle class, so our parents really couldn't gift any cash). Spouse makes about $200k all in and I make $270k after bonus (in-house counsel after 3 years big law).

Honestly, the biggest perk to our NW is a combination of (1) no kids, yet (2) we work remotely in a MCOL Midwest city, and (3) I went to a T14 for free. My spouse and I never had any debt whatsoever (even student loans since we went to our state school on scholarship). I suppose long story short, keep costs down, save, invest, and avoid bad debt, and generally you'll be fine.

Once we hit $5M NW, I may stop practicing law and downsize my job to something less stressful. If we ever hit $10M, we'd probably stop working altogether. Not sure how much of a pipedream that is pre-50 with kids.

Not a pipe dream at all. Wisely but fairly conservatively investing and living on your income with no assumed savings above that, you could double every 10 years. You'd do it faster if the market continued to resemble what it has for the past 10 years; slower if the market drags. But not a pipe dream.

What kind of question is this? y’all just ask anything on here lol

I assumed some younger partners might chime in. It’s unlikely but not impossible, which is why I was curious.

Spouse worked min wage jobs when I was in law school to help make our rent. Spouse also worked before I was in law school, but before immigrating to the US from a country where wages were a few hundred per month. They entered the relationship at basically net worth zero.

I think this would be tough without inheritance. My spouse and I are 36 and 38 and we just hit $5M combined (approx $2M me and $3M him). I am younger and have a higher income and he has been a much more consistent and diligent saver since his early 20s. We are planning to coast FIRE at $6-7M with a paid off house which we hope to hit in the next few years)

Just started in Biglaw as a first year - one of the partners made a passing remark that he couldn’t remember my PQE but thinks I’m “the same as X associate”. Went on LinkedIn and saw that X associate is a third year. How do I gently correct this misconception in a future conversation?

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I cry every day and constantly am made to feel stupid for not understanding the highly technical (cont.)

Tips for bankruptcy associates who eventually want to move in-house? 3rd year associate in bankruptcy/restructuring group doing mainly bk lit but a few deals too. Need to stay in BL for at least another year for the money, but eventually want to move in-house. Any tips for someone who’s practice is a bit of a hybrid (and who will never likely do discovery or handle a depo)

I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? And FWIW I went to HYS and I’ve had a clerkship so it’s not like I’m not smart

I’ve been at a job for a few months and hate it - partners set unrealistic deadlines, micromanage, and create work that truly is not necessary/push urgency when there is no real urgency. I had other offers prior to accepting this job that may still be options, and going back to my old job (for a pay cut) might also be an option. I can’t tell if this is just burnout, growing pains, or just an untenable work environment. Would you ride it out for a year at new job or pursue other options? HELP!

Specifically, what does the buyer do with this? It seems like these provisions should trigger but nothing then happens...
