Get an MRI first to find out what your pain actually pertains to. I would advise against the surgery unless you really need it. Physical therapy can usually do the trick
Follow a Paleo diet. I’ve had chronic back issues for years and came to a head during the fall. I began following a Paleo diet (sometimes Keto as well) and began seeing a Chiropractor. Paleo diets generally consume foods that reduce inflammation and promote overall good health. I highly recommend.
Start doing pilates then start going to chiropractor twice a week. Not one of the ones that thinks adjustments to your spine cure cancer, but one that thinks adjustments to your spine just relieve tension/pain
I had a 12mm herniation in the L5, S1 from a fall off a landing of stairs. For me steroids and therapy only worked for so long before I because immobile and suffered perm nerve damage. Def get the MRI - surgery was the only option for me. While I still don’t have feeling in my left foot, at least I am relatively pain free again.
Had a friend who just had the surgery and is light years better.,know another when the surgery it worse
My significant other has the same issue. Bought an inversion table on amazon which has made strides. Also changed diet which has also had a huge impact. Try googling foods that reduce inflammation and stay away from foods that’s increase inflammation. You will see a difference!
If it’s actually herniated, surgery is about the only option to actually repair it. If it’s just a bulging disk pinching a nerve, typically a round of steroids will clear it up almost instantly. I had a bulging disk myself and suffered for 6 months with my family doctor just saying to take aleve. Went to an orthopedic surgeon who did an MRI and gave me steroids which made a huge difference even the first day. In hindsight that was overkill if my family doctor had just prescribed steroids in the first place.
Surgery must be your last option. Speak to doctor and see if sleeping on hard bed or even on floor with light cushion will be helpful. Recently US doctor’s guild has changed the recommendation. They have recommended not to even get spinal shots as there is no proof that it helps. Also, another recommendation was to continue your daily activities. I hope this helps.
Chiropractor should be your first line of defense and he can guide you with pain intervention doctors and with all next options. Get prior approval from insurance though.
What I have said is based on my own experience after an auto accident. Best of luck.

Disc herniation is prevalent in over 70% of the population and the vast majority show little to no symptoms. Physical therapy has shown to be more effective long term than back surgery, which come with a number of complications should anything go wrong. I doubt a doctor would even consider surgery without injections/PT first, but definitely do not rush to get under the knife. PT can really work wonders given the right amount of time and effort without any of the risks. Hope you find some relief soon
I had a herniated disc and a round of steroids helped. I also started yoga twice a week at my house at night and also core work to help stabilize my back. I may not have abs like Chris Hemsworth, but I can hold a plank like him.
