A club worth meeting the type of person that could be your client in biglaw won’t likely be very happy if you’re there for business reasons (to meet clients). You should do things you enjoy in life and if that puts you in a room with influential people, then you’ll have something in common and networking will be organic.
I did join an exclusive golf club but I did it because we make a lot of money and I really like golf so it was a long dream of mine. I’ve definitely met some people that may someday help my career but I’d never ask. It’s a bit like separating home and work, a lot of these clubs that have a lot of high profile/successful members don’t want those members feel like they’re ever being pitched or sold something because the selling point of the club is it’s meant to be an extension of your home where you can unwind and not be bothered.
At the same time, putting your kids in a private school will have basically the same effect in my experience in terms of meeting these types of people.
If you don’t mind me asking, how much were you making and what was the cost of the membership (or maybe what % of membership was total HHI) such that you felt comfortable spending that money? I’m balancing that currently. Obviously I understand that everyone’s situation is different but just curious to hear yours!
unless u meet a celebrity there and become their lawyer, ur better off investing that money
Join it first because you want to and you want to surround yourself with “that” community, not to develop business. The biz dev stuff has to happen organically or else you’ll just be known at the club at the guy trying to leech business.

Agree with everyone else. Join because you want to and are passionate about the sport, the clients will come.
I joined a polo club and have since brought on a bunch of new clients that I never would have dreamed of having an "in" with, but that only came after a few seasons and earning their trust on and off the field.
