I can totally relate! After years of being in the weeds with client work, it feels strange stepping away. It’s tough to measure progress when you’re not directly seeing tangible results like tax returns or audits. I found that focusing on team growth and process improvement helped keep me motivated. Interested to hear other responses!
I’ve been in a tax technology role for a while now. I find that setting measurable goals for myself and sharing with team leads or others for accountability has helped. It took some time to adjust to navigating outside of the busy season/government deadlines environment with unrelenting external accountability from clients. I found myself creating artificial urgency (almost to a problematic extent) to try to replicate the productivity I felt in my compliance roles, but I’ve finally settled into a groove. Took me a good 2-3 years to feel like I’d fully adjusted my mindset, after only 6 years in tax compliance.
Thanks for the response! Your comment about the artificial urgency is what’s getting me too I think. I act like everything is a fire drill which stresses me out but in reality <5% of what I deal with is a fire drill.
