Are big egos anywhere near as common outside of big law? Is arrogance a boon to success, or does it come after the fact? I find it hard to believe that so many people let a job get to their heads and become their whole personality.

I have found the most gigantic egos at midlaw. People who want to be a big fish in a small pond, who know they’d get eaten alive by other biglaw partners so they take less sophisticated work in bulk.

I work in mid-law and there are very few “big” egos at my firm. It’s part of our culture though.

I work in the federal government and 95% of the egos have been doj but even then it's like 5 people.

In the past I’ve wrongly thought that forgiveness brings restoration of relationships. But reconciliation requires everyone involved to respond -which is beyond our control. Forgiveness says I’m canceling that debt- it’s my marker & I’m tearing it up. I’m putting myself in Gods hands -Justice comes from Him. We mistakenly think that forgiveness is weakness as if we just capitulated. Forgiveness isn’t a sign of weakness- It takes strength to forgive. God tells us to forgive.

Currently at a super conservative defense firm. I do really well but keep getting the criticism that I tend to just do things on my own initiative. I’m just predisposed to being decisive and rather autonomous. Besides being a solo atty, where would this skillset be better suited? Plaintiffs work?

There’s been some turnover over the last six months at my firm, and I have taken over more files. I’m having a hard time getting ahead of briefing schedules and have been asking for extensions on a lot of recent briefs. In my practice area it’s never really an issue or objected to. However, I feel guilty that this is still happening. Any tips for getting over this?

Advice: my firm incentivized associates to get licensed in fed courts - 4 fed courts for a 5k raise. They also covered the admission fee. I just accepted an offer with another firm and will be putting in my 2 weeks notice tomorrow. Is it wrong to submit an expense report for the charges I incurred related to the fed court admission fees? I didn’t plan on moving to another firm; the new firm sought me out and made me an offer - the process happened so fast. I want to be professional about this.

Thanks for your recommendations.

When drafting a brief or other submissions for court or arbitration, do you use words such as clearly, erroneously, etc. to emphasize certain points? Our managing partner says that we should, but all of the writing guides for litigators that I've read repeats the mantra "show, don't tell" and explain that most judges dread such words.

I know that the politically correct thing to do here is to do whatever the managing partner wants me to do, but I just wanted to ask for other ppl's opinion.
