Would it be like a day of shadowing, or would you be expected to do work? Either way, I’m not particularly interested in giving my time for free. If you think it is worth the opportunity, though, I’d consider it.
If you really feel like the opportunity is too good to pass up, the gamble could be worth it. Just never know what'll happen. Could also look at it as a good networking opportunity, worst case.
If it's too good an opportunity to miss, then don't miss it. The worst you have lost is a trial shift. The most is the opportunity to work for an international outlet. Have you got anything better to do??
I'm not a big fan of the idea, but it comes down to circumstances. If the opportunity is legit and could lead to a great position, and the trial is also a legit way of seeing how you work, it might be worth doing. It used to be enough to see someone's writing samples to judge their capability, but perhaps companies have grown skeptical and want to make sure the applicant can be seen doing the work.
Normally, I would err on the side of No (know you're worth, don't give away your work product for free, etc.), but in today's climate, as someone else here stated, the most you've lost is one day's worth of work, but the possibilities you could garner may be indispensable.
