Are senior accountants still allowed to ask for help when they're stuck? I mean, after going through all resources, references, checked how it was done previously, tried and failed a few times...nothing works. Tried my best and such.

Are we allowed to get help? Either from colleagues or our supervisors?

Asking, because I got the scolding of a life time for an hour and half straight when I asked for help as a senior and now I'm wondering if I'm even good enough to be a senior...

Yes! I still ask questions as a senior. Maybe you need a new firm, but no one should be scolding you for asking questions.

That is a relief I can’t even begin to explain. Thank you so much!

Getting scolded for asking for help especially after you've tried your best is definitely not normal... I'm a senior and work together with my managers and senior managers on a daily basis. start looking for an exit.

No, you can definitely ask questions to get help from managers or high level. But you don’t just ask a question directly. You need to state how much effort you put into and what your conclusion is. Ask if your conclusion is right or wrong, you will get more information from your supervisor.

Had the same thing happen but I’m not a senior. Was so suprised that accountants can’t ask for help.

like

In my experience, Seniors do ask for questions from Managers. I worked PA and now in industry. I ask the VPs and Managers questions all the time. I do the same, I try to solve it myself but in some cases I have to just ask my TL for help.

WOW! this happened to me. Mind you, I didn't even work a month; I was new to the company and they put me on PIP. I left. This is one of the signs of toxic company.

I'm going through something similar. I got a grown-up bollocking a few weeks back and was criticised for asking questions.

Thing is: my being curious and inquisitive is on my CV's personal statement. They got the candidate they hired.

But they misrepresented the role and the training, it wasn't a few videos it was 36 videos, mostly an hour or more long each, and mostly out-of-date as processes and filepaths had changed. And I was treated by he colleague I was due to provide cover for as if I was stupid for not knowing things.

Training Method at the Company: Osmosis

I'm looking for a new role now. My leaving would put them in the stuff for one of the Ops departments but I cannot stand at my age being treated like this. I love me more, so I'm off asap.

I hope sharing my story helps you figure out your next move.

Of course you should. You should have asked much earlier instead of spinning the wheel for 1.5 hrs. I know I would appreciate if my senior reaches out and asks questions instead of spen1.5 hrs to figure it out by himself/ herself.

like

I suggest a junior spending 15-30 minutes to figure it out by themselves first instead of asking me directly. I totally agree that don’t spin your wheels like 1.5 hours, it will be wasting too much time.

You're asking for help here, so one answer to your question is, "Yes."

Doesn’t sound like that person is a great boss. If you help people grow and develop it’s better for the team. Sounds like whoever you’re working with has zero patience. If this is common for your working environment, I would definitely move on.

At my firm, even Partners ask questions. So never feel too experienced to ask questions!!

My former boss, a tax seminar instructor, with 50 years tax experiences asked questions. I think OP works at toxic working environment. That’s it.

That extremely counterintuitive.

Working now at the company where I ,after asking questions ,was given “warning” that I don’t understand the concepts and was told they are monitoring me. Having 18yrs of exp, I know it is toxic and looking for another role. The worst thing is that toxicity comes from the top management =tone at the top
