As a junior, my supervisor controls every detail of my work. I'm frustrated right now because he just rewrote my entire stakeholder email from scratch, which made me question if I understand our brand voice at all. I want to learn and improve, but this constant editing is crushing my confidence. What's the best way to approach this?

Early in your career, heavy rewrites can feel like rejection, but they’re often about alignment, not capability. Compare your draft to your supervisor’s version line-by-line to spot patterns in tone, structure, and word choice, then build a personal “brand voice” cheat sheet. Ask for specific feedback on why changes were made, and propose sharing work in draft form to get early input before it’s fully baked. Over time, this approach will help you anticipate their edits, shorten the gap between your version and theirs, and rebuild confidence through visible progress.

I would also ask your supervisor to just ‘track changes’ in a word doc or provide constructive feedback so that you can learn how to improve. They should be willing to talk through why they made certain changes

If you are encouraged to use AI in your agency as most of us are - you can give it the original and the edits, it will learn what your supervisor wants and you can do your own proof round with AI.

Do you have another colleague you can trust that can give you advice? I’ve found it helpful to have someone in your corner that knows the work you do, can reassure you that you’re good at what you do but yet can remain objective about the situation. I had to deal with a frustrating colleague whose title was above mine but luckily I didn’t report to hear.

I know it’s a different situation but all I’ll say is whatever you do…
1. Receipts. Receipts. Receipts.
- Screenshot evidence of bad behavior just in case it’s your word against theirs later, hopefully you’ll never need it

2. Always Be Objective.
- It’s so easy to take things personally and let emotions come into play but it’s vital to check them at the door and always behave objectively as best as you possibly can

3. Inform Someone You Trust
- If there’s someone you can trust to keep it between you, it’s helpful to have someone in the loop to go to for advice, then you don’t have to explain the entire situation when really it may be a small moment you want advice on

I hope it improves soon, I know how hard that can be!
