Don’t get me started on finding your own coverage.
Um at Inizio we always had to find our own coverage! I used to spend an hour putting together a coverage plan in summer when everyone is off
Yes. It’s about communicating with as much notice as possible, not permission.
Chief
Huh? You’re not asking permission. You’re letting them know.
Tell them “I’m letting you know I’ll be out on [insert date]. “
Done
My team was like that when I joined. Asking permission, giving too many details of where they were going, etc. Couldn’t be me. The team gets a calendar invite with no additional info. Manager can reach out if there are any issues.
No one has questioned it.
If you are an adult, you understand someone still has to manage this so not everyone’s gone at the same time. (Think long weekends, and at my agency it’s always the juniors who jump in with the request for the coveted bookend days first.) So yeah sometimes we have to ask people to adjust. It’s just not possible to accommodate everyone at the same time.
I agree re: coverage, that is not something people should have to figure out themselves. That’s the manager’s responsibility.
This^^^
As someone on the opposite end of this… I agree. Always feels odd someone asking me if they can live their life. Yes, of course. Just be an adult. Give some notice and/or help find coverage.
💯
Wow y'all's companies must def operate differently than mine. Our policy is 100% asking permission, the details even state to do all the approval steps "BEFORE you buy that no refundable ticket"
Hooo boy that sucks. How bout this: You have a family commitment and you are giving them a reasonable heads up (two weeks in advance seems good), and as a producer the only thing I’d probably request is that you review the upcoming deadline / delivery and attempt to avoid those dates. But if you can’t avoid it, and wanna do a vacation, heck it’s on me as a producer to find a solution for coverage. Wishing you well on your upcoming time off!
Love when you ask ahead of time and there's coverage but you get denied.
Response to the denier: You have a family commitment, and you’ll be out on those dates. End of story. If you have PTO you can use it. If you get denied bring it up with your supervisor.
