Bob Barrie is probably the most awarded art director ever. Yes we know who he is.
I worked with Bob on a project once as a junior. He would just drop a stack of concepts off on my desk and when I saw them I was like, “Well, I guess we’re done.”
Do what makes you the most comfortable and happiest. Don’t worry about what it looks like.
🙏❤️❤️
It’s tough, OP. The business has devalued the actual work. So, if you really want to just do what you love, expect to take a massive pay cut. Or freelance! Freelancing is really the most effective way to use your craft.
I just stepped down to an ACD position. I’m a terrible presenter but a great writer. I feel good about my decision
Absolutely possible. It’s more about you being able to handle the rumours that will come along with a perceived demotion.
Ha, I’m a CD who wants the exact opposite
Hiring is tedious and firing is horrible. You can have those parts.
Know the feeling, being purely a manager is pretty much kryptonite to a true creative person. This industry makes it hard - get too hands on and the team thinks you micro manage, pull too far back and you seem expendable.
It’s so fucked up that we reward talent with more responsibility.
Feeling this so hard right now. I miss the work and hate the focus on operational bullshit. There’s just so much stigma associated with “going back down."
Freelance is the way to go for this.
I was at a BBDO happy hour and learned that everyone there is a creative director. Some are solo, others lead.
Might be a good fit?
I have a friend who worked on London and he said (if anyone knows, feel free to verify) that over there you don’t have as much pressure to keep climbing. He said you could just be a very good and highly paid art director or writer and stay in that position.
Plenty of hands on CDs in the biz. Not possible in your situation?
Not possible currently but I’m hoping for a change on my next adventure. Any takers? :)
Ah - You looking to move on, Grasshopper? Nothing immediate (I build project teams) but DM if you’d like to share deets. Never know.
