AstraZeneca is actually a merger of several companies over the last 6 or 7 decades.
Most of their American infrastructure comes from Stauffer Chemical Company, who had facilities all over the US, as well as ties to Superfund sites all over the US, too.
In California, Stauffer had the Montrose Chemical works in southern California as well as some facilities around Henderson in Nevada while in northern California, Stauffer bought the old Mountain Chemical Company, which had plants in Richmond and Martinez in the Bay Area as well as the Iron Mountain Mine near Redding, which was shut down in 1963 and ever since then has been an environmental issue for the company as well as being the first mine site on the NPL and the first site on the list for Acid Mine Drainage.
Stauffer also bought and tried rehabilitating the old Merrimack Chemical Works in Woburn, Massachusetts and also had ties to some most notorious Superfund Sites, from Novak Farm in New York, Lipari Landfill in New Jersey, to Enviro-Chem in Indiana as well as Stringfellow Landfill in California.
Stauffer Chemical was also an owner of Montrose Chemical Company, who was at one time the largest manufacturer of DDT.
Stauffer was eventually bought by Rhone-Poulenc, a French company that owned a lot of subsidiaries including Imperial Chemical, Incoporated and Zeneca Chemical and another subsidiary in Germany (I believe) called Rhone-Poulenc-Rohrer.
Eventually the parent company would then be called Astra with their US Pharmaceutical wing called AstraZeneca.
If Astra is pulling out of the US, it's going to be interesting for not only their litigators still battling it out either in court against their remaining insurers trying to get coverage for their liabilities in these Superfund site, but with the regulatory agencies involved, both State and Federal, who are looking to replenish CERCLA funds as well as get these sites actually cleaned up.
I suppose that's the story of American business in the post-Reagan era. Many Americans are not loyal to the country, they're loyal to their corporation, and to themselves. It's probably going to get worse now that a handful of venture capitalists, some of foreign origin and with dubious loyalties, have captured the White House for the next four years at least.
yes
America First I guess, but from the bottom of the list!
Well they aren't an American company, I'm not sure how that applies here.
They're scared of what will happen when the protection against lawsuits is removed. Serves them right
Regarding AZ ditching the US - true -this happened to me personally as well as another 2 US colleagues. I figure it’s just a matter of time until others in the US experience it
Didn’t they just announce 60 billion in investment in the US. I think I remember them announcing new facilities and r&d build out
Dang. I’m interviewing for a role at their Delaware Wilmington location.
If I remember right, that's the US Corporate HQ for Astra, as it used to be the former corporate HQ of Stauffer Chemical Company and Rhone-Poulenc in the US.
Interviewing for a role in Gaithersburg, should I be worried?
I'm interestd
