At my current small firm, my title is Senior Counsel, but I’ve only been practicing for five years. I know that in Big Law, Senior Counsel usually implies 10+ years of experience and a different track than Associate. I’m worried that if I apply for Associate roles, I’ll look over-titled, but if I apply for Counsel roles, I’ll be technically under-qualified. Should I change the title on my resume to Associate to match industry standards, or is that considered lying about my history?

They give you a fancy title so that they can bill you out at a higher rate.

I feel this too. My title is senior associate but I’m more mid-level.

I would use your real title - they will see from your grad year how much experience you actually have. Someone unfamiliar with your firm will look to your grad year to figure out where you should fit into their hierarchy anyway because that’s a universal identifier in a way title is not.

I think you should use your title, they can figure it out by looking at your resume.

Hi, been stuck in the contract analysis/review cycle. I have asked a few recruiters how to make a lateral move into in-house. They told me to focus on contract management, which I have been doing for the past year. Now that I have, are there any sites besides “jobscan” that I can use to make sure my resume fits the job descriptions? Does anybody know any recruiters that could help me, as well?
