What is a good salary for a director in NY?
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

Hi there! Interviewing w/Amazon for a non-tech role (Associate Category Manager aka Associate Buyer) and was asked what my salary requirements are for base+bonus+equity. Can anyone share insight on what Amazonians make in this role. I have 4 YOE and glassdoor is not very helpful.
Any feedback is appreciated 🙏 Amazon

Generally, I find out as much information about a position and the company as I can. What is the salary range for that position? Are they a profitable organization (or a charity)? Do you know anyone that works for the company, or has anyone posted on GlassDoor or Indeed about the salary ranges for the position or similar jobs? When going into an interview, I'm prepared to have a general range of what they might offer. As far as bringing it up, you can casually ask to confirm if your assumed salary range is accurate towards the end of an interview without it being too intrusive.

That should be in as early as possible because if salary is not aligned there is not much reason to live forward. Salary is not just money but benefits, stocks, PTO, etc
At the phone screening. I don’t think it make sense to find out in the middle of the interview
Counterpoint - my current role that I applied for was upgraded when I applied to offer more than what the original role was worth because the interview process made the team love me and want to hop through hoops to offer me what it would take to close the deal.
If I’m applying for management positions that are general manager or over that status, I honestly approach the compensation issue within the first 9:55 minutes of that interview usually after introduction I know that sounds rushed however, the way the climate is in the workforce looking for jobs that are big responsibilities for big money. I feel that it paves away for the interview to go.
1) The longer you wait … the more time they have invested in falling in love with your candidacy … the higher your leverage in the negotiation. And the more they can find money somewhere if they need to come up another 10-15%.
2) The person with the most information going into the negotiation has the advantage. So if you know the range bec it’s on the posting then you have equal knowledge. If they don’t post the range then whoever throws out a number first loses. There is no advantage to you throwing out a number first if you don’t have solid knowledge of the pay range.
If you are truly interested in the role then I would do 3 rounds without asking and then I would think it would come up. Check publicly available sources like Glassdoor etc to figure out the potential pay.
Yes! Don't flip your skirt up first. Let them be the one to show their hand first. If you need a damn job, whatever the range is should be acceptable (the higher end anyways). If you're trying to jump ship and/or allowing someone to poach you when you have a perfectly good job, you should still wait until the offer is made. You can always decline if the grass isn't actually greener. Don't let the startup carrot be dangled. (25 years?! No. Don't derail your own train or worse your family's even if you're in a modest income bracket).
As this gentleman stated, you might shoot yourself in the foot if you're number is much lower their first offer. You'll seem greedy if your much higher and they may take the opportunity to rescind if they think you'll just leave when something better comes along. Get the offer, push the envelope slightly if it is indeed very low or at least get a solid 90-day revisit agreed upon, and show them you're the best.
I'm only a private chauffeur for wealthy families. We were connected through an app/service so it was clear what they paid to the service and were happy to pay me that amount when eliminating the middle man, but since there's a gratuity expectation I let them decide how much to pay since even with regards to the base charge since they pay more than I would've quoted even if I added an auto-gratuity. I purposely wait an extra day or two after the event or occasion when I tell them we'll settle up the next business day. I usually wake up to more than I ever could have expected even with a tip. For the ones that wanted an invoiced breakdown and and auto-gratuity since it was easier or could be expensed or written off, I added 25-30% and they still thought it wasn't enough. I suppose I contradicted myself slightly, but a traditional employer will always give you an answer when asking what they are offering even if you are asked your expectations first.
The employer is the trick You're the ho. If asked to flip up your skirt, say you want to see what they're working with first.
At the beginning and then at the end.
I always bring it up in first call. Tell them my salary and expectations.
Then at the end after they level you.
I have to find out if it’s worth entertaining
I asked when they're scheduling., I always ask before the interview. It doesn't make any sense for either of us to waste our time if I'm not willing to work for whatever wage they're willing to provide. And I say that upfront if they ask why I'm asking, but usually they just tell me. You know what you're worth. That should be the baseline not the goal.
Look at the range on the listing? Or look at a state that requires it to be listed
