My tip, write every number down. Don't do mental math. They ask 5x2? Write 5x2=10. I'm very good at mental math and once I got asked 4x2 and I said 16. If I wrote it down no way would I have made that mistake :)
Another tip - show your framework to your interviewer as though they are a teammate. What that means is that you sit near them, turn the page towards them and show it's a collaborative thing. #protip
Get better at quick math in your head
I downloaded mental math app before my cases, helps practice. But main thing is structuring approach, asking right questions and drawing insightful conclusions from exhibits / data provided. Practice cases with consultants.
Also, fit matters more than you think. Be really polished in your responses by having 5-6 stories flexible enough to cover a variety of questions.
The math on the cases I received and the ones I gave is never hard. If it seems tough there is a trick to do it an easy way, or they are looking to see if you can rapidly determine if you can eliminate it. The final case I received we had to choose one of three options for ROI; two were easy to solve in my head but the third was something like 3.7/41. I didn't even bother trying to solve it, all I needed to realize was it is much smaller than the winning option so there was no need to actually calculate it, just say it is something <10% and obviously not the best choice.
^it is a dick response but it's a fair one. The truth is, the number of people who come in and just flounder on the math portion is just sad. It's the easiest fix with mental math apps (as you mentioned)
Thanks so much for all the great responses everyone I really appreciate the insights

Do the mental math exercises, but recognize we don't expect human calculators in interviews. I can easily wave off getting long division or some calculation wrong as long as the logic is there.
What's a good mental math app that you all have used?
^ the page turn is such a good tip. I was doing that without realizing it during my mocks, and a Bain C2 at the time commented on how much of a difference it made.
OP - which firm are you with now? and which role are you interviewing for? Heard MBBs hire at a lower level.
