Been in consulting for almost a year and was recently recruited for a logistics manager role at a smaller company. Is it worth it to go into industry this early? (Cont.)

If it’s strategic then yes. If you’re chasing vendors and trucks then no.

I agree with PwC. I lived this exact scenario a year ago; left after 1.5 yrs in consulting for a “strategic” role that turned out to be nothing more than a gloried procurement manager.

Fortunately I was able to get back in with my firm, but it was a miserable experience that cost me valuable experience / networking.

It’s likely that you’ve learned a lot in your first year, but you need at least 3 to really develop the skills / experiences that set you up for a more senior level role.

I want to change direction out of federal consulting, and think this could be a good opportunity to do it. But I’m curious if people have had success moving from industry back to consulting roles?

I got my MBA after 4 years in industry and then transitioned to consulting so I didn’t go directly but I found that consulting firms really valued my industry experience. I haven’t been in federal but I know some firms make it difficult to switch so via industry might be a good path. I would be curious about the company though when you say smaller - for example, are they more advanced than some in logistics/technology or behind? It’s important to think about what you would learn at this company and how relevant will it be for a consultant.

So the company is in the food industry, seems up and coming. One of those newer Mediterranean chains. I’m still weighing my options because I’ll likely be able to own my work and make a really big impact early in my career. At the same time, it’s not as big of a name as where I’m at now and probably a lot less structured growth.

That’s a good point, I don’t want to leave for a procurement manager type role. Unfortunately I’m stuck in a situation where I need security clearance to continue my role in federal and it’s taking much longer than expected. I’m not sure if I’ll ever get the clearance I need to get more hands on experience. I’m torn between waiting longer and losing valuable time to learn.

Update: I had a discussion with the recruiter that I thought went really well. She gave me more of the details about the logistics manager role, starting with their base salary. It was much lower than what I’m being paid currently, and she mentioned that there was a different more technical role that was open that aligned with my background as well. She said for the System Admin role the ballpark salary would be a raise for me. The thing that attracts me to this opportunity so much is the culture at this company. My project/client right now is miserable and with the added complication of security clearance, I’m willing to move anywhere that will pay me the same amount (or more) where I’m not constantly stressed. Unsure if the system admin role is exactly for me, but I think I’d be happier working for them and could make internal move if I don’t enjoy that role.

Did a first interview with hr rep, went very well. she set up the hiring manager meeting for a few days later. Met with the manager. Another great conversation, went over time and was told I’d hear back about panel set up. Following day I get a request from hr rep to “continue the conversation” with manager. This is set up Tuesday.
Why do you think the manager wants to meet again? Good? Bad? I felt great about the interview when we ended.

Is there anyone who has a contact at the Wall Street journal or NY Times or something like that?

I’ve been published for some thoughts on cybersecurity, but it’s was in a smaller IT Magazine. I’m trying to find the best way to take it to the next step for a freelance writing side opportunity. The writing is very separate from anything I’ve worked on in the Big4 or other consulting firms.. more about cybersecurity overall and the future, regulation, etc.

Any advice would be welcome. Thanks!

Hi All, I need some career guidance.

7+ YOE - 3 in tech support role (after BE) and 4+ in BA & PM role (after MBA). Worked on RPA and process improvement projects for 2 yrs. Currently working on internal tool implementation projects - PMO, UAT, change strategy, etc.

I want to switch to a product company in a PM/TPM role, and I am planning to learn something new which has a great future scope, pays well, and aligns with my profile. Any recommendation would really help me take a right call.
