You know what sucks is when you land the job and have to spend a few years trying to remind everyone how you’re an expert in whatever you did before you arrived there. Make it clear, bring the paper but speak to it more than you expect them to read it. Especially if you would prefer to do at least the same level of work as you did in the past.
Agency job? Or in-house?
I’ve only had this happen at agencies I ended up not wanting to work at. Not saying it’s a red flag, but it isn’t the norm.
I bring them in case the person interviewing did not have a chance to look at it.
The only places that ask me to bring a resume are the ones that don't seem to be an agency agency. It's always like a startup or in-house place.
If I’m going in and they haven’t read my resume or visited my website, then I’m thinking WTF??? That’s called doing your homework for fucksakes! Red flag indeed, especially at your level.
True
But what’s the point of a resume when you have a portfolio?
Why wouldn't you bring both your resume and portfolio? Genuinely curious why this is even an issue. Maybe I'm old school (I'm early 30s so no, not actually that old) but I like to show up to interviews prepared. That means having copies in case someone got pulled in to meet with me last second and never got a chance to see my resume or work. Sometimes you meet with account people who don't care as much about portfolios. Plus, giving a resume means they'll likely have it in their desk, front and center, for at least a day or two unless they weren't impressed. It's a good reminder that they met with you.
I vote for being prepared too. Bring a laptop/ipad to show your portfolio, copies of resume and, if you’re me, 10 questions for everyone you’re meeting with.
