Trying to find an entry level role as a data analyst. Mostly getting ghosted or rejected. Is my resume that bad? Kindly share your thoughts

Thank you so much for your reviews. I’ll make the recommended improvisations and yes my lack of relevant work experience could be a factor. But, I’ll keep trying along with getting some certifications.

I highly advise you find an internship ASAP, possibly through your career center or a school alumni. It will be really hard to get a job as a data analyst without professional experience. Perhaps create some personal projects with links to prove your skills.

You are also likely getting held back by being an international student. Aim for very large companies for full time jobs, as they have systems in place to deal with the legal considerations of employing a non-citizen. Smaller companies will likely reject you immediately because they do not have the bandwidth to hire lawyers for this.

Lastly, remove your GPA. I hate to sound harsh, but in most graduate programs a 2.9 GPA would get you kicked out and is considered “failing”, so a 3.2 does not look much better. This GPA does not convey that you mastered the material, so don’t show it to employers.

Best of luck!

Are you going to need work visa sponsorship now or in the future? I only ask because your undergrad was in India and recent; not clear if you're here on a student visa. If so, that could be what's killing your chances.

Your resume looks fine. I don't hire data analysts so I'm not well informed, but I noticed you don't have any work history or internships involving data analysis. You also haven't worked in a corporate environment. You could be getting passed over for others who have that hands-on work experience.

Overall, I think your resume is easy to read, and I like the format. However, here’s just a few recommendations.

1) Is your GPA needed? If not, I would replace your GPA line with either an honors and activities section or an extracurriculars section.

2) Under your research experience section, were your projects only for the one month? If not, add the full timeframe.

3) I would rework your bullet point descriptions - think about what you are trying to convey and what recruiters are looking for.

For example, your second bullet point under work experience talks about designing, allocating, dispersing, and tracking an events budget of $3K. That is not an amount I would highlight nor would I select those particular descriptors as it feels a little exaggerated since you, in short, managed the annual events budget. Simply your description here and remove the dollar total.

4) Stylistic recommendation: add a tiny space under your headings (i.e. between EDUCATION and the line underneath it) - emphasis on tiny space - so that the word doesn’t run into the line so much.

Hope this helps!

I suggest you remove the GPAs. These aren't really helpful on resumes once you are looking for a job in the "real" world. And I'm sorry but a 3.0 and 3.2 GPA aren't high enough to help you stand out. Anything less than a 3.7 should be included. Let your exerpince speak for itself

I see a lot of people telling you to remove GPA. I'd check first (maybe with the career center?) about expectations or have 2 versions--one for the employers who specify a minimum GPA requirement. In my campus recruiting experience, the GPA is expected to be listed because firms have minimum thresholds and we prefer to find that on your resume at quick glance. In that context, there's a big difference between a 2.8 and 3.2. One qualifies; the other doesn't.

You need to network like crazy. 85% of jobs are secured via networking. Ask your parents, your friends parents to refer you to people in relevant roles. Reach out to alumni in relevant roles. Ask each person if they would be willing to set up an informational interview so you can learn about their job and career path. Do not ask it they will review your resume or if they know of a job opening at their company. Build rapport with people. And then find a reason to follow up every 6 to 8 weeks. These relationships will lead to job opportunities. 90% of my student clients land internships and jobs using my tactics.

I started working for a new law firm, much larger than the firm I was working for previously. The main attorney that I work under had noticed some mistakes I was making (I am a NY paralegal who took this position with the understanding that they’d be teaching me NJ and NYC real estate). Anyways, the attorney decided to tell the HR manager about the mistakes I had been making. Rather than HR discussing with me, the manager told my dramatic coworker to tell me..how should I handle this? Very hurt!

I have 2 masters (mba, ms) from top schools, been in consulting for over 10 years, I am confident that I know my stuff well..but still I keep getting rejected. Interviewed with Google, Amazon, Cisco, McKinsey, and a few others and every-time there is something that is not a match... are the hiring managers looking for like 100% match? That will never happen!!!

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? I’m graduating in December, with a background in environmental economics and policy. Consulting didn’t work out this cycle. Made it to final rounds for Bain and Kearney but in the end didn’t get an offer. I want to recoup and try again, but I’m worried that once I’m out of undergrad the door will be closed to starting in consulting.

What can I do to make this happen? I have friends and connections at Bain and Kearney and the other firms as well, but not sure if it’s feasible now.
