I like and endorse the duo behind the chain of Indian restaurants in Manhattan 1.Rahi (Village) 2.Dhamaka (LES) 3.Adda (in LIC) , they are planning a couple of more restaurants 4.Kebabwala (opening shortly at 82,2nd) and 5. Masalawala (moving to park slope,Brooklyn by eoy).
There are also likes of Tamarind and Junoon which are ‘classics’.
Rahi closed. Semma opened in its place
Love Indian food. Is North Indian very different from South’s?
Rising Star
North is much less spicy
Indian Accent for a fancy meal, Dhamaka for getting a taste of what Indian food has to offer (not a great spot if you don’t eat meat though), Adda for very spicy food (not toned down at all), GupShup for classic North Indian food. Avoid Junoon (the new one isn’t good). Tamarind is Indian food for the non-Indian palette (if this is your first time checking out Indian food that’s kind of authentic!).
Every neighborhood also has its places worth ordering in from! Let me know if you want specific neighborhood recs!
For UWS, solid options are Awadh and Anar, especially for ordering in. If you want vegetarian food, Ayurveda Cafe is solid too. If Spice Symphony delivers to you, it’s probably one of my favorite spots for North Indian food and Indian Chinese. They are on 50th. Utsav and Saar Indian Bistro in Midtown West are also worth checking out!
You've gotta try "Vatan" and Gupshup!
