you might have to take a CW internship, not a jr cw job.
maybe at another agency.
probably at another agency
cuz I don't know if your bosses are gonna be happy knowing that you don't really want to do the job they hired you for.
if you don't want to intern as a CW, try meeting with more senior writers and get their feedback on your book. make edits. then get more feedback. hopefully one of them might hire you.
I moved from account to creative within the same agency - it’s possible! I’d talk to people on the creative team at your agency to see if they can get you involved in any other projects. Once you prove you’re good, they may be able to go to bat for you. Just be transparent about the whole thing so your current team doesn’t think you’re being sneaky. It’s a tough move to make but it’s not impossible.
That's great to hear someone has done it before, thank you for the advice ! That's what I had in mind!!
Congrats on the new job. Here’s the bad news, if you’re writing copy as an accounts person chances are people in the creative department aren’t going to trust you and the more time you spend as an accounts person the harder it’s going to be make that jump without going back to school. If they need you writing copy at your current agency, I would go to them and use that as leverage to ask to be a copywriting intern.
absolutely. it shows initiative on your part and how bad you want it. plus it'll teach you how to concept. I would also study new work on thedrum.com daily and what's won at Cannes, d&ad and one show.
what undergrad did you go to? there's very few that come even remotely close to preparing you the way MAS (or another portfolio school does). I personally very rarely consider hiring someone who didn't go to portfolio school.
always in between design and copy, so my portfolio was a bit all over the place. I took the account intern position because it was an amazing account, it was a great way to learn about the industry, and it was a cool job. Now that I have graduated, I have revamped my portfolio and completely branded myself as a copywriter, yet I apply to Jr positions and feel I am not 100% prepared (maybe that's me being too critical of myself). So, this promotion is pretty much the only offer I have on the table. I love the people I work with, the account is great. Since it's a Spanish account, there is the need to write copy specific to the country, and sometimes the writer isn't the ideal person. So my account manager, now knowing I love to write, is going to include me in campaigns that need extra copy help. But, I know long term I want to be a copywriter. So, I want to take advantage of the fact I will be in the agency and make myself known as a writer, without giving my boss the feel that I am leaving my work, the work I get paid to do, behind. Any and all advice welcome !!
what city are you in? I took night classes to build my portfolio after the work day and eventually was able to xfer over.
I'm in Miami! I also thought about that, we have a Miami Ad School here and they offer non-credit classes at night. Is that something worth investing in?
