Beyond obvious malicious intent, what are some of the subtle ethical dilemmas or "gray areas" you've encountered in your design work?

Valid lol. This make is so much harder to do work and ends up creating so many issues

Meta's Data infra was like 90% IDF agents and they constantly were pushing agendas at the company.

It's increased. Meta and Microsoft both expanded their Tel Aviv presence while doing layoffs.

I don't necessarily think design has to be malicious for it to be coercive, and sometimes I feel bad about that. You know, gray patterns, other design "tricks." I feel bad about them but it's also not up to me to decide if we use them or not.

like

Yea that's very fair and I feel like sometimes companies know that and actively push for it because it lives in that gray area

Using AI. I’ve had a few projects lately where they consistently told me to use AI for everything. Why am I even here then??

like

Yea unfortunately, I feel like this is going to be more and more common place. It doesn't seem like AI is just going to go away, so I hope that there's at least some way to integrate it on more ethical grounds but that would likely require legislation which could take ages

Working on campaigns for liquor companies. This is more of a gray area for me personally. There's a streak of alcoholism in my family that makes this uncomfortable for me. I held my nose and did the work anyway, but I did not feel good about it.

like

Yea understand why this could be tough especially with your personal ties to it. Sometimes you have to do what you can to make a living so I hope you don't feel too bad

My boss in my creative agency threatened to fire me because I, a male, came into work with my nails painted. Is Operations paid the least at your respective firms? I was hired to a Client Service Delivery role with a heavy focus on project management. I regularly interface with leadership internally and at the client. But, I am aligned to the “Operations” capability and make the least of my teammates who perform seemingly identical work but are aligned to “Strategy and Consulting.” I worry I’m on a career path to being paid the least wherever I go, because Operations is in my title and background.

If you see an open job posting at a company you want to work for, what steps do you take to apply? I’ve been told that cold applying and making no contacts is usually not going to lead to anything, and that’s been true in my experience. But should I reach out to someone first? Should i apply and then email someone? In HR? Or someone who’d be directly supervising me? Or someone at my level? And what should i say? Thanks!

Hey fishies! I’m looking to take a leap into the remote world. I am a Sr. Graphic designer and art director in Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦. I’m looking to take on more of an art director and creative director role, remotely. I can attach my website and a portfolio if anyone can help out. I have been designing professionally now for just over 15 years now. I work very quickly and very well with other team members. I also take on freelance work. I’m married with 2 kids so the more work the better.
