Can anyone let me know what to expect working in Public Accounting specifically in Indirect Tax (Sales & Use Tax, etc)? Would the work/life balance be better then other service lines like Federal Tax? I currently work in Industry Indirect Tax but never Public Accounting and was very curious.

It depends on whether you do consulting or compliance. But it is generally better work life balance. Compliance is always state mandated filing deadlines and consulting is less driven by the state and more by the client ( unless it’s VDAs).

Thank you for the insight! I’m currently working more on the compliance side although I’m interested in the consulting side of it. Correct, the filings deadlines are monthly but that makes sense the deadlines are more client driven in consulting

More work life balance is a myth in PA for SUT. You will be working the same as other tax groups. You have a utilization goal and other metrics. You may be doing both a mix of compliance and consulting. VDAs, Taxability Research, Audit Defense, Lookback Reviews, Admin/Billing

All of the duties make sense and fits my experience. I agree that there are utilization goals similar to other departments. It seems like that may be the case at least for EY which i find interesting because i’ve heard its not as crazy at some other places granted outside of Big4

Compliance question here, I have always thought of the SALT deduction on the fed return as a perm item & have treated as such in such sch M-3. I see that some people put it as a temp on sch M-3. What is the justification for treating it as a temp on the M-3. You don’t set up a deferred on the def RF for the state tax deduct & it is also a rate impacting item (I know that some temps can be rate impacting). But this all leaves me to side with perm. Does anyone know the logic behind temp treatment?

I’m having trouble working in Tax. I’m overwhelmed and am feeling like I’m not producing my best work. I want to talk to someone at work about it but a) I don’t know who to go to and b) feel like it’s not worth it because there’s nothing that anyone can do but tell me to get a different job. I feel like I SHOULD say something to someone though, right? Idk. I’ve been on the job hunt for a while now and am not really having any luck, which is just adding to my despair. What should I do?

Intl Tax folks, how long did it take before you were confident in your role? I've worked for the past 3 years in a practice that is heavily consulting based (inbound and outbound structuring) and I feel like I'm only just starting to understand the foundational concepts (where I can explain them clearly to clients) and offering a shred of value. Then I'll have calls where partners discuss complex tax, legal, treasury and other related concepts that all go over my head.. it becomes overwhelming

I'm able to sleep throughout the night and not wake up early (which is a huge negative right now) and literally feel no need to stay glued to my computer as in prior years. Am I broken?
