Have heard a lot for different opinions on these. The logic is that it’s easier because there is a lot of supply in cities like NY, Chicago and SF, but the counter argument is that the offices with less supply are also way smaller and have a lot less demand.

It’s cyclical. Tons of growth oriented work over the last few years with a strong economy. When it takes a downturn, we will see cost cutting work spike
I don’t know the split, but if you want to do one type of work over the other, you can align yourself to that at McK. E.g., you can join the marketing & sales practice, do exclusively that work which is primarily growth.
Is cost cutting work now considered strategy?
Honest question from me too. I didn’t consider it strategy but if that’s what it is I guess I’m strategy consultant. We just lump it into performance improvement
Edit: we also implement so we’re not pure strategy in terms of work performed, but we are implementing the strategy developed in the initial phase. Clients don’t always hire us for the implementation (too expensive)
The split isnt very meaning data point. You just need to be better than your peers to keep getting strategy work.
