In house is great. I make 450k+. I dont look to work for fulfillment. Work is stupid.
SC1 - what year did you graduate law school?
Work life balance in house is generally way way better than big law and depending on the company, still good pay - not as high big law but still pretty good.
It does get better in a lot of ways. Limited weekend work no all nighters and people act like humans. It's really nice working with business and not just lawyers. Pay will go down and the job itself is more chaotic because things aren't organized and you have no support, so it's a trade off. The chaos and lack of support drive me a bit nuts, but it's worth it for the improved quality of life and not having to bill.
Honestly lack of support depends on organization. I’ve been part of a very small but growing legal team at a software company, super large legal team also at a software company and now a legal team of over 200 at a huge company and the amount of support varies at all of these. The more sophisticated the department, the more support
it really does get better in house!!!! then you can develop hobbies and take the fulfillment piece completely out of work lol
What do you find interesting? I personally felt like everything got better once I moved in house. But others may have differing opinions depending on what makes you happy and what you like. Do you like dealing with people, helping educate different departments, and dealing with a variety of types of issues, along with evaluating risk against business decisions? Then you may be happier in house. It's much different than practicing in a firm, and you use different skills. What about legal work do you not like?
Depending on the company and your role, there may be less politics in house, which is nice. I find it much more interesting to work with and discuss issues with non-lawyers in the company. You get to hear more of the business, the projects they are working on, what issues they are having (and every project and client is slightly different), and you can provide insight from a slightly removed position.
So. Much. Better. It's still challenging and can be stressful, but it's just a totally different environment based on my experience. I've been in house for almost 8 years now and I never ever look back. I would rather dig ditches for a living than go back to working at a firm.
I was in your spot but litigation. I quit without anything lined up, took the summer offer, and found an in-house role. Been in-house for almost 3 years. I’ve never been happier and feel like myself again.
What about something with legal tech? I’m not sure if they have roles that are less people facing but it is worth checking.

It’s not.
