Having lived and worked in both... Chicago. You can’t be a big fish in KC. All the “big fish” are set and not going anywhere. And there’s really only 2 agencies to choose from, so much more opportunity in Chicago. Sure you’ll save more in KC... but there is a 100x more culture in one city block of Chicago than there is in all of KC. 🤭 sorry
KC has an amazing arts scene. First Fridays are a good time. All the gallerys opening up. Great museums. Surprisingly good food scene. All depends on what you’re looking for and if you use “culture” as code for diversity. KC is admittedly not very diverse.
From, lived, and worked in Chicago. In Kansas City today. Like many have said, there are only so many agencies in town so options are limited when it’s time to make a move. Chicago speaks for itself, but KC would surprise you. Also, some really nice budding agencies beyond VML and Barkley.
Beyond work, can’t beat the cost of living and there really are great things to do. Would recommend living in Kansas City proper if you’re already debating between a place like Chicago or a smaller market. I couldn’t live further out.
Chicago all day
First lets set the record straight... will you live in DOWNTOWN Chicago or the suburbs? If you choose suburbs, go KC 100%. If you will live AND work in Chicago, then Chicago 100%.
From KC. Lived in Chicago. Chi town is by far the better choice.
Unless you’re debating which VML office to work in. Which in that case, KC.
Chicago!
Chicago 100%
Only downside of KC: pink slip day is moving day. Heard good things about living and working in KC, but it’s a waaaay smaller job market than Chicago. Too hard to get that next gig if the first one goes tits up. (And it always does.)
This makes sense.
All depends on your definition of “Trump Supporter.”
These aren't remotely on the same level. Chicago all day.
And twice on Sunday.
Kc for sure!
I’ve only ever heard good things about KC.
KC has more potential in that living is cheaper and that makes things more possible. And greater possibly to be a big fish is a small pond.
both great, but very different. Chicago is much bigger, more cosmopolitan and has more of a scene. KC is a great place, but feels much smaller and more intimate. I would visit both first if you can. my preference would be Chicago but I'd not mad with KC.
Smoked Gouda, obviously
I love KC. small town with lots of fun stuff going on and growing like crazy. but in a different class than Chicago. depends what you want.
then KC might be right for you!
Chicago
If you are female Chicago. If you are male KC. KC is still a full on bro zone. Close to impossible to advance as a women.
I’ve never experienced a more empowering culture for females than I’ve had at Barkley. Barkley women shine and thrive (and we all support one another 100%). Taking a seat at the table and voicing strong opinions is not only encouraged, it’s expected.
Both amazing cities. Either one would be a great choice. I’d even suggest living in both at some point
KC has a ridiculously low cost of living. Salaries are lower too, but quality of life will likely be higher, however there are way fewer agencies. Chicago is an incredible city. It’s more expensive, but there are a lot more agencies to choose from.
I lived in both. Ask me anything
Thx!
