Agreed, totally true. But loyalty is a 2-way street. I see many managers ignore their juniors and expect them to deliver with no mentorship or appreciation. You get what you give (and it is exhausting).
Hullo, jr here. I’ll stop chasing shiny things when y’all realize that I’m working 70hrs a week doing every last minute social post the client asks for, doing hundreds of newspaper spreads, writing billboard copy, radio, etc. and not getting a raise cuz I haven’t made anything “award worthy”. Y’all don’t give me award briefs. Doing good work that makes the client happy & keeping the backend running doesn’t get you a raise and barely gets recognized. I know, I’ve been somewhere 3 years w/o a raise in NYC with student debt that I can’t afford to pay every month because of it.
Are we talking about the same VML?? Loyalty is coming up short on paying my bills.
As VML2 said, loyalty doesn't pay the bills. Keeping your head down doesn't pay student loans and rent, it gets you evicted. When companies want to return the favor and pay juniors a reasonable wage that covers the student loans needed for the necessary degrees/ad school required for the position, then we can talk.
Why don't you give them some constructive feedback and save yourself the headaches
As a junior, I thought I was a real tastemaker and pioneer and everybody else just didn't have a clue.
@VML3 jumping agencies does pay the bills actually, you get a raise every time if you're doing it right.
Because we don't want to play your stupid political games? Get bent old man.
Spectacular comment.
I have seen many junior/associates leave only to return within 2-3 years to be hired as a supervisor making 2-3x what they would have made if they stay. Unfortunately job hopping is the quickest way to make a buck and advance a career in advertising. Agencies do not reward people for staying, they reward because they are afraid they will leave. The more comfortable you are, the more the agency thinks your not going anywhere. The less likely you are to be compensated fairly.
I've heard VML leadership sucks. Just saying.
What does 'team loyalty' mean in this context? Having a bad attitude? Not going after a better job or more exciting account?
Friends help your career, loyalty to an agency? Meh.
No patience for juniors with attitude.
Was a junior at vml. Jumped that ship. Best move I made.

I'm gonna stand with OP here and say following shiny objects pays no bills either, and instead tells everyone you're all style no substance
I cannot tell you how many times I've had the creative manager put my team on something shiny to help with poor moral only to have them have an attitude about the everyday work because they are working on "something important"
I imagine that will happen when delivering shiny objects no longer provides career advancement?
At the junior to mid level? 70+% easily. Until someone is moving into (project, program, account) leadership relationships may be a useful accelerant but output (or at least claims to output) seem to define progress
Hey, if you can win a shiny object for a client you work on... that's the real deal. Just do good work, do your job, do your best, that's the lesson.
