Clerking now. Deciding whether to return to my firm afterwards or go somewhere new. Two offers, same city.

A is known for being a lit firm and specifically for this practice area. Majority of the work in this group occurs in this office.

B is known as a corporate powerhouse. Technically B’s also higher ranked in this lit field than A, but I don’t think this field is the first to come to mind when someone says its name. Big group, but only 5 ppl in this office.

What should I consider?

Sounds like it’s a satellite office for B, might consider whether that impacts firm politics and career progression. being in the main office may be more important esp when you’re starting out

I would hope that as a clerk, you know that firm rankings (Vault) are meaningless. Litigators should look at other metrics like Chambers to make an informed decision. Just because Wachtell is a V5 does not make it a better choice than Kellogg, which is a V70 or whatever.

Yeah, I’m not that focused on the actual rankings. Was just limited by character count when posting my question.

In this scenario I would go with A. With only 5 people in the office, I think you’d potentially be siloing yourself.

Partners - Do you ever take vacations?

I have been at my current firm for about 1.5 years, and in that entire time the partner in my group hasn't been out of the office a single time. Is that normal? I can't tell if it's standard for big law partners to not take time off, if the dynamics for my group may be different (only 1 partner in the entire group), or it the partner I work with is just a masochist.

Friends, need some feedback on an idea:

I’m thinking of starting a podcast interviewing leaders at startups about their experience with specific challenges - I know, cliche, get a more original hobby, etc.

Not looking for the narrative arc of How I Built This or Masters of Scale. Instead, looking to uncover specific problems faced by companies that tried something new for the first time. What did they not see coming, how did they adapt and measure, etc.

I interviewed at KPMG on 11/14 and got a verbal offer the next day but since then waiting to hear from them. Been following up continuously but the partners are not replying it seems. In the meanwhile i have an offer from BT offering 90k for 4 yrs of experience which seems to be fair. I am just unsure whether to accept the offer as I was waiting for kpmg reply as I want B4 on my resume which apparently is a big deal. Is BT also good on resume for future employers ??

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. But we are all old and when we graduated 150k to 200k was about the max student loan debt people graduated with. So educate me. What is the average student loan debt these days?

Lateral that just went through first bonus season with the firm. Not in a major market but workload is comparable to major markets. Surprised at how low the bonus was. I received solid reviews and my annualized hours were well above the requirement. Should I approach anyone about this? Wondering if it is worth addressing or if it could compromise my standing.
