Be sure to research all that’s required for an LCSW before you return to college for your MSW. Speaking from personal experience, I did not understand a state license, 3 years of what our field calls “supervision” etc would be needed to practice independently: The university I attended (which is a large and reputable university & very well thought of), did not mention this when I entering the clinical track of the MSW program. Plan to invest a minimum of 3 Years *post * graduation before your state will allow you to sit for a full licensure exam. This varies by state, but in Georgia it is 3 years. if you are not in the position to pay cash for your masters degree, I would highly recommend seeking out some grants before you enter school. My program was pretty expensive even for a state school, and as a therapist, we do this for the meaningfulness of the the work, not the pay (speaking for myself, obviously). If I had to do it over again, I would’ve looked into some scholarships or grants. I hope this information is helpful to you!
Following up on the above comment, you can sit for an associate license exam (LMSW) in GA pretty much immediately after you graduate, however, the three year rule, and a minimum number of supervision hours still apply (in GA) before you can sit for your full licensure exam, which would enable you to open your own practice. Keep in mind also so you do pay someone for your supervision, so this is another financial investment you will want to plan for. Some agencies or small therapy practices will take you on as an MSW. Your pay will be less, and you will have to be super supervised by someone signing off on your notes. The field is very fulfilling., People (in general) are just usually surprised at the education level and the other requirements to practice independently. You may also consider
becoming an LPC. As I understand it, you may have less years of supervision Hours required (in some states), and I think you take one national exam now instead of with social workers, taking an associate exam you have to pass, and then later a full licensure exam have to pass. I passed both on the first try however, I will say I did study hard for both exams.
The pay is definitely not that great but the work is rewarding.
Much less money. It truly is a work of love. Hard to pay the bills; I have moved to quality manager (so boring) but at least $20k more a year
