I started working in mental health at age 53 (second career scenario) after I already had my retirement funded and work/life boundaries more established. I can’t imagine starting in this field as a 20 something with significant bills, debt, and limited life experience. So much is expected for so little compensation.
I think it shows how little everyone cares about mental health…shows now that there is a mental health crisis
I’m 5 years in. I’ll be licensed in 2024 and then I’m taking a break and going back to get my Ph.D. Being a therapist isn’t sustainable.
What will your Ph.D. be in? Do you suppose that you will earn more in that field in academia? We’re you in private practice or in a agency?
This job doesn't pay as much as other healthcare professionals. I am fortunate that my husband greatly helps with the expenses. It's not all about money but still, I wish we were paid a little more.
If I didn't love my work as much as I did, I would've transferred to a different field a long time ago. Some of us need a good raise.
