Controls engineer here!

In this field there is so much to know. Not only you have to keep up with IT and cyber security, you also have to know programming in many different languages, communication protocols, SCADA MES and ERP systems, and you can’t forget the electrical part and keep up with all the different standards.

It can be overwhelming at times and it feels like you never know enough. How do you keep up? You learn on the job or take special classes to pick up knowledge?

If you can get your hands on a set of drawings from a reputable company that does a lot of power / energy type projects, that do the kind of work your talking about that’d be my suggestion. You won’t learn the ins and outs of electrical design reading the NEC especially if you’re doing SCADA. It helps but you need the experience to give yourself context into what they’re talking about. You’re on the right track and if you’re continually learning you’ll one day be one of those old guys that knows everything.

I want to get better at designing electrical systems. That’s something I haven’t had too much exposure on. I have no idea where to start. I tried reading through the different standards like the NEC, UL508, or the NFPA79 but they’re not easy to follow sometimes or can be vague.

I also want to learn more about SCADA and MES systems. I’ve taken some classes from the ignition university but doesn’t seem like it’s enough to fully grasp how it all works.

Does it all come with time and experience? what steps do you take to speed up the process? Will companies hire a person that doesn’t tick all the boxes.

I have 4 years of experience and I’ve worked with people that have decades in this field. It seems like I’ll never know as much as they do
