Most if not all places distinguish the roles. Titles themselves depend on the company though...so the words creative and design can be interchangeable at some places and vice versa. I can tell you in my experience across a few tech companies that the flow of power/control in role goes as such from most to least.
Product Design (sets and expands product and experience vision and design; can serve product manager, division leaders or become product leaders)
->
Brand Design (design systems, brand design; serves the brand design group or CMO)
->
Ad Creative (serves the PMMs; can become PMM, or program manager)
This is what I’ve seen at least. Curious of others experiences.
That’s 100% my experience as well and agree that ad creative is always in service of product marketing 💯
It sadly often feels extremely limiting because there’s a fairly narrow tech marketing view on how campaigns are expected to convert.
We recently re-orged and I’m CD’ing in a Marketing org overseen by a VP whose background is product marketing...she has no trust in brand campaigns as strictly brand campaigns and actively squashes anything that isn’t directly tied to product marketing goals
Is it common in tech to differentiate between the two? I’m a freelancer that does both for tech companies, but am looking to go brand side.
