When im hiring I look for 3 things usually:
1) is your work insightful and well crafted
2) do you have a big ego or are you humble?
3) are you a halfway decent presenter? (as in, when you present/talk about your work, is it clear and interesting)
I don’t care a lot about awards or the names of the agencies you’ve worked at before.
After reviewing the quality of their book my only question left is “would I enjoy having lunch with that person?”. And then that’s about it.
I look for variations on what's been said already.
1. Do I think they actually did the work, came up with the idea? Or was it a case of credits padding?
2. Would I like to talk to them about non work stuff for more than 10 minutes.
3. How strong do I think their work ethic is? Are they going to be a hard worker? Do they feel proactive?
I love to see all concept sketches, sketchbooks, and designs before the client became the “creative director”. Finals are great, but I like to see how they got there. Tells you A LOT about their creative approach, their passion and work ethic.
